From “Illegal” movie project: A poignant film depicting the plight of undocumented students, pursuing their aspirations against the odds. If you have trouble squaring the ugliness of the term “illegal” with the beauty of this cinematic narrative, think about what our system of immigration laws is doing to the nation’s sense of humanity.
Here’s the statement of the producers on the next steps for undocumented youth after President Obama’s decision to halt deportations for many young immigrants:
Through a series of interviews with undocumented kids, activists, policymakers, non-profit leaders, educators and members of the clergy Illegal seeks to raise the consciousness level of the American public regarding the importance of full immigration reform beginning with the Dream Act.
Though an important step was taken with the president’s order to halt the deportations of some young undocumented residents, we must remember that his executive order could change as early as January under a new administration. What is necessary is a law that provides a path to citizenship for these young people. Our work is far from over.
