Today the world is mourning the nortena and banda star Jenni Rivera following a fatal plane crash with no immediate survivors. Rivera, born in Long Beach to Mexican immigrant parents, was not just a dazzling vocalist but one of the most prominent artists to speak out against Arizona’s racial profiling bill SB1070. Here she is, using the stage as a platform for mobilizing audiences against the legislation as a part of a new civil rights struggle. “They’re haters, baby!”
